“I’ve had the immense pleasure of working with Melissa Knoetze, from Winelands Function, over the past few days! Melissa and I were hired by a local company, operating from overseas, to organise and execute an indigenous flower painting workshop. Melissa was hired as the event coordinator, and I as the art facilitator. However the event space, a café that the company had rented for the workshop, was locked upon arrival with no one in sight. The phone number that we were given for the working barista went straight to voicemail.

Melissa quickly made a plan and communicated it clearly with me. As students started arriving, I explained the current situation— apologising for the immense inconvenience, and hoping still that someone would come running to let us into the venue. Alas, no one came— except Melissa. Who, in ten minutes, had coordinated and organised a new venue space at a neighbouring bar. Within fifteen minutes Melissa and I had setup the entire new space for the workshop. I believe I was in fact still shaking as I began teaching. Throughout this whole ordeal, Melissa had remained completely calm, disciplined and confident. She vocalised her expectations and plans with me in absolute ease; while simultaneously ensuring that everyone in attendance was comfortable, and still communicating with the company that had hired us! Melissa’s ability to organise, multi-task, communicate efficiently and think quickly had saved the whole event!

In fact, the new venue had actually been more of a success than I think the previous location would have been! After everyone had left (with smiling faces), Melissa turned and asked me if I had had fun, to which I replied: “Ummm, I wouldn’t exactly say fun”. Her bubbly nature, calm composure and positive energy had made it all the more easy for me to do my job — despite it being a rather stressful situation.
